Ground Truth for Africa’s AI Future

At the core of AethexAI’s mission is a belief that Africa should not just adopt AI—it should shape it. Yet today, less than 1% of the data used to train large language models (LLMs) comes from the continent. This data gap means that many AI systems lack the context, nuance, and insight needed to serve African people, industries, and institutions effectively.

The AethexAI Lab was created to change that.

Our Lab leads efforts to build Africa’s data infrastructure from the ground up—focusing on the collection, structuring, and stewardship of high-quality datasets rooted in local realities. We work across sectors where data is both critical and scarce, including healthcare, agriculture, public services, and education. Our goal is to ensure that the next generation of AI tools are informed by African voices, experiences, and needs—not assumptions made elsewhere.

In healthcare, we’re mapping clinical workflows, terminology, and health-seeking behavior to enable smarter, safer digital tools. In agriculture, we collect field-level data on farming practices, climate resilience, and crop lifecycles to support food systems and rural livelihoods. Across all domains, we work with local partners, institutions, and communities to ensure data collection is ethical, representative, and secure.

By building foundational datasets that reflect the diversity and complexity of African life, the AethexAI Lab plays a crucial role in making AI more relevant—and more powerful—for the continent. This is not just about closing a data gap; it’s about building a future where AI is trained on Africa, by Africa, for Africa.
